Crystal clear loaded Insert wagglers are the same body diameter as the straight versions – 6.0mm – but feature finer 3.0mm diameter inserts. These inserts are much better to use when fishing up in the water and on the drop as you can see the small dropper shot (e.g. No 8 or No 10) register one by one on the tips. Sometimes your bites won’t be the float submerging and disappearing but a subtle movement on the tip. That could be a sideways movement or the float holding still when it should move etc. With these inserts this is much easier to identify and to spot when a fish has held up the bait than when using a thicker straight waggler.
These can be trapped with small shot either side or even rubber float stops. Float stops are excellent when needing to move the float up & down a lot when adjusting the depth as it radically reduces damage to the mainline. If doing so then placing at least 2 below the float helps to prevent any slippage.
If more shot are required down the line then the shot around the float or its actual loading can be reduced. Of course, everything is dependent on the actual size, weight and accuracy of the shot used. It also depends on the type of float adaptor you use as some can weigh as much as a No1 shot themselves ! You can even remove the brass weight altogether and trap-shot the waggler conventionally.
These Loaded crystal clear Insert Wagglers typically take an additional 0.9g (approximately) which is about 2BB. At the other end of the scale this is also equivalent to about 15 x No 8 shot if you divide the capacity by a multiple of very small shot and ignore the additional weight of any heavy float adaptor. And there is good reason for this.
You can trap these floats with an equal number of shot either side so small No8’s etc and then spread the remaining droppers in a string of spaced out singles or you can use doubles (as many don’t like to use the harder non-toxic No 6’s etc on fine lines so double up much softer No 8’s instead). But if you change the base weight for the next size up – as these crystal clear insert wagglers are deliberately made so you can do this – you can reduce the extra capacity needed to just a few No 8’s. If you still trap shot with some then you can fish very shallow and right up in the water with just 2 or 3 droppers. This is excellent when fishing for roach & chub which can often feed right up and almost under the surface.
You can also do the complete opposite and change the base weights for a smaller size giving you much more capacity for shot down the line. In this way your ‘dropper’ shots could be bunches making up bulks. This can also compensate for the extra weight of any swivel type float adaptor which tend to be heavy.
These loaded crystal clear insert Wagglers have a permanently built in and bonded eye. Some other crystal clear Wagglers have removeable eyes which hold the weights which are a simple push fit and that system can lead to those eye & weight assemblies completely coming adrift and the angler retrieving their end tackle – without the float ! With ours the eyes & weights cannot come off unless the angler wants to take them off. So you get all of the benefits of interchangeability without the risks.
By having a selection of types, sizes and lengths enables you to ‘mix & match’ float sizes and even weight loadings. This way you can have the desired weight around the float for casting distance – shot, pre-loaded and a combination – with suitable shot down the line for your presentation. You can adjust and modify all of these for a given set of circumstances. And you can change between sizes without having to make radical changes to your set-up.
There are two tip colours available; dark orange and yellow. Changing either to black (which, strangely, although VERY useful is by far the least popular colour) is the simplest thing to do.
Below is a guide to sizes
